Exciting new theatrical visitor experience available at Cascades Female Factory
An exciting new interactive visitor experience at the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is bringing the extraordinary story of the women and children who were incarcerated at the now World Heritage-listed site to life for visitors. Part history lesson, part roaming theatre show, Her Story is an accurate and powerful depiction of the harsh life within Yard One of the Cascades Female Factory in 1833.
Her Story is played by two actors, one portraying the woman whose story is being told, and the other male actor playing the parts of an overseer and a doctor. The performers and creators of Her Story, Judith and Chris Cornish, said they are both excited to be part of helping to develop this iconic site.
“We are thrilled and delighted to have the opportunity to tell more of the amazing stories of the women and children who were held in this prison’ sad Judith Cornish. “We have had feedback already from our preview performances in recent weeks that Her Story helps visitors to really understand the significance of this place and what happened here.”
The Cornishes are also the owners and operators of Louisa’s Walk, a long-running and popular costumed guided tour/performance operating in South Hobart and currently the number one Hobart experience on Trip Advisor.
Female Factory Site Manager Julie Henderson believes that this new dramatisation will help the Cascades Female Factory become a ‘must visit’ destination for tourists and help to generate the awareness and visitation that the site warrants.
The Cascades Female Factory is one of 11 sites that collectively comprise the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. It is Australia’s most significant site associated with female convicts and women were incarcerated here as punishment, to be reformed, or while waiting to be assigned.
The Cascades Female Factory is now open on weekends and public holidays from 9 am to 3:30 pm. ‘Her Story’ runs for approximately 45 minutes and is currently available every day at 11 am.
