Chinese delegation to highlight famous Mogao Grottoes

10/01/2007

Members of a Chinese delegation visiting Port Arthur will present a talk on the famous Chinese Mogao Grottoes tomorrow (Thursday 11 January).

The group of visitor services and tourism managers is the second delegation from China to visit Port Arthur in eight months.

Heritage planners attended a week-long workshop in May last year as part of a program to help address concerns that the rapid development of the Chinese economy could negatively impact on the country’s valuable heritage sites.

Tomorrow’s talk will be held at 3pm in the Junior Medical Officer's House conference room.

The Mogao Grottoes (or caves) are a series of 492 Buddhist temples cut into rock and feature murals painted by pilgrims from the fourth to the 14th century. The site is one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China.
