Port Arthur honoured at Tourism Awards

06/11/2007

The Port Arthur Historic Site’s leading position in the Tasmanian tourism industry was acknowledged on Friday with major wins at the Tasmanian Tourism Awards.

The Historic Site took out the awards for Major Tourist Attraction and best Heritage and Cultural Tourism, and was inducted into the State’s tourism Hall of Fame.

PAHSMA CEO, Stephen Large, said that the awards were a testament to the uniqueness of the Site as well as to the professionalism of its staff.

“We are truly fortunate and privileged to work in a place with the extraordinary history that is evident at Port Arthur,” he said. “But it is the team that works to conserve it and to bring its stories alive for visitors, as well as looking after their needs that makes visiting Port Arthur an extraordinary experience for a quarter of a million people a year.”

Mr Large was thrilled that the Site had been honoured with the Major Attractions award for the eighth consecutive year, and said that the Site was not resting on its laurels.

“We continue to work towards our vision of making Port Arthur and the associated Coal Mines Historic Site cultural tourism places of international significance.

“We are currently involved in a major conservation and interpretation project at the Separate Prison, we have some exciting new tourism experience package products on the way, and we have enjoyed record-breaking visitation from Tasmanian residents.”

“During our recent anniversary celebrations, we gave away over 1500 Ticket of Leave passes. During that month, on some days almost half of our visitors were Tasmanians, compared with an average of around 10%”.

The Port Arthur and Coal Mines Historic Sites are also significant components of the Australian Convict Sites nomination for World Heritage status.

“A World Heritage Listing will, if granted, be a wonderful acknowledgement of the international significance of our sites.

“However the value and high esteem in which Port Arthur and its associated sites are held by the local community, as testified by recent visitation and these awards, cannot be underestimated.

“That is what will inspire our team to continue to strive for the highest standards in conservation and visitor experiences.”
