Soldiers Memorial Renewal Project

Work is underway on the first stage of the Memorial Avenue Renewal Plan.  There are currently 38 macrocarpa (Cupressus macrocarpa) trees in the Avenue, which was originally planted in 1918 to commemorate the men from this area who had fought in the Great War. Although some of the trees in the Avenue are still healthy and could live up to 30 or 50 years, others are severely in decline.

The renewal plan will involve the felling of 13 trees, and the replanting of 21 trees to replace those already removed in the past.  The remainder of the trees will be removed and replanted in two more blocks other the next ten years. This is in accordance with a recommendation made in the Conservation Management Plan developed for the Memorial Avenue by a heritage consultant, and informed by a strategy developed by an arboricultural consultant.

It is intended that through this program, the Memorial Avenue will be conserved in a spirit of perpetual remembrance for future generations.
