Port Arthur is Smoke Free

The Port Arthur Historic Site will be smoke-free from Tuesday 1 November 2011.

The ban on smoking will apply to staff, visitors, contractors and volunteers when on the grounds and premises of the Port Arthur Historic Site. The policy will bring the World Heritage-listed site into line with other high profile Australian visitor attractions such as Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Sovereign Hill in Ballarat.

There are a number of reasons why PAHSMA is making the Port Arthur Historic Sites smoke free.

Visitor feedback has consistently included criticisms of smoking on the Site and recommendations that the Site should be smoke free.
To provide a safe environment for our staff and visitors, which this step will help by safeguarding them from the risks of tobacco smoke and secondhand smoke.
It will also provide healthy behaviour models for the many families with children visiting the Port Arthur Historic Sites.
Port Arthur lies within a sensitive natural environment, and the reduction in smoking on site will reduce the environmental impact that butt litter causes both on the grounds of the historic site and also in the ecologically sensitive Masons Cove area and surrounding Tasman National Park.

Visitors will still be able to smoke whilst in the car park, but will have to butt out on entering the Visitor Centre. Signage is being installed to inform visitors of the policy.
